The Golden Gate Bridge is a real symbol and hallmark of San Francisco. Crowds of travelers constantly flock to this place for the sake of only one beautiful view of this magnificent attraction. It is a suspension bridge that crosses the strait and connects San Francisco to southern Marino County. From 1937 opening until 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world. It is 1,970 meters long, 230 meters high, and weighs 894,500 tons.

Brief historical background

The idea of building the bridge was voiced by the self-proclaimed emperor of the United States, Norton I. From January 5, 1933 to 1937, work on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge lasted. Joseph Strauss and Irving Morrow were the first to draft the future structure, but in fact the bridge was built thanks to the Latvian Jew Lev Moiseev and Charles Alton Ellis who designed it. You will not find their names on the builders’ plaques, they are not included in the history of the construction of the bridge, but all because of the disagreements between them and Strauss.

The opening of the Golden Gate Bridge took place on May 27, 1937. From 6 in the morning and in the next 12 hours, the bridge belonged only to pedestrians. And the very next day, President Roosevelt issued a decree and the very first cars drove into the Golden Gate.

In 1987, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the bridge, the idea of blocking traffic was voiced, which would allow all participants in the festival to walk along it. Thus, on Sunday, May 24, 1987, about 300 people passed over the bridge.
