It is a one-person inflatable kayak constructed with 254-gauge PVC, a puncture-resistant cover, and a tarpaulin base. Weighing 25.5 pounds, this kayak is highly portable and can carry up to 250 pounds. You might not want to pack heavy if you want it to perform its best.

The multiple air chambers and double-locking Boston valves allow fast inflation/deflation and prevent leaks even if one puncture. You can use the hand pump included in the package to inflate and get in the water in less than five minutes.

The Sevylor Quikpak K5 comes with a paddle, but I recommend buying a better one separately as it is quite flimsy and not up to the mark for a real kayaking experience. Nevertheless, the price of this versatile and portable kayak is still worth it.

The removable skeg included in the kayak helps with tracking and easy maneuvering. It features D-rings for attaching equipment, spray covers, and bungee storage.

If you’re just starting to kayak and looking for a portable, budget-friendly kayak that you can effortlessly use and store, you can’t go wrong with this one!

Buying Guide

Here are some things you need to consider before buying an inflatable kayak. Keeping them in mind while exploring your options will help you get your hands on a product that’s worth the money.

Seat and Weight Capacity: Tandem or Single?

If you’re a solo adventurist, this criterion won’t give you a hard time. But for beginners, I suggest considering whether you’ll kayak alone or prefer to have another person on board while enjoying the activity.

Tandem and single kayaks are generally the most common varieties, but you might also see some kayaks holding up to 3 people.

When you think about the budget, getting a tandem kayak is more ideal than going for two single kayaks. However, seating capacity isn’t the only factor here- you should also check the weight capacity.

Check whether the two-person kayak will remain steady and easy to maneuver when there’s only one individual on it. Positioning the seat may be easy, but it can get tricky on the water.

Pet owners who love to go out with their pets will find a tandem kayak the best choice. But for those who have timid or tiny pets who like to stay close to their owners, I’d recommend a single kayak.

Weight, Portability, and Dimensions

Portability is one of the main reasons why people choose an inflatable kayak. After all, I, personally, also won’t enjoy carrying a 12-foot hard-shell kayak every time I feel like hitting the water!

Nevertheless, it is still important to consider the weight and size of the kayak while purchasing one. The average length of an inflatable kayak is ten to twelve feet. But they are available in lengths as short as eight feet and up to fifteen feet.

Unlike longer kayaks, which prioritize stability and space, shorter ones enable nimbler movement but have less storage.

Some inches won’t make much difference, but two feet or more can be a significant game-changer.

As for the kayak’s weight, the average weight is 25 to 30 lbs. However, this number depends entirely on your preference.

Durability and Materials

When I first heard about inflatable kayaks, I was dubious about how durable and safe they could be.

Though often surprising to kayak novices, the materials used in inflatable kayaks’ construction can be impressively tough and resistant to punctures – especially given how portable and easy to carry these boats are.

Not to mention, most inflatable kayaks feature air chambers, multiple layers, and secure valves. So you need not stress about them bursting because of a small jagged rock. With wise material selection and good-quality construction, inflatable kayaks are quite durable.

Here are the three materials most commonly used to give the perfect balance of lightweightedness, puncture resistance, and toughness:

PVC: Although PVC is not the most environmentally-friendly material, it is by far the most common fabric used for inflatables.

The reasoning behind this decision comes from several reasons: its lightweight build makes it easy to carry, and secondly, it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Furthermore, PVC is often mixed with other materials – such as nylon – in order to create a stronger defense against tears or rips.

Although effective, one downfall of using PVC happens when exposed to extreme heat or ultraviolet rays; the two don’t bode well.

Hypalon: Out of the three materials, Hypalon is the costliest but also the most durable and advanced material. It can resist abrasions and UV rays while still maintaining its shape.

Cheaper models may use this material as well, but only in small amounts or as a coating over PVC plastic.

Nitrylon: Nitrylon, a mixture of 1200-denier polyester fiber and nitrile rubber, is more environment-friendly than PVC. It is also tougher, more dependable, and can resist being punctured or scraped better than PVC.

Although Nitrylon is on the heavier side, it’s usually only used for kayaks’ sides and bottoms instead of the whole body.

Other Features

Most inflatable kayaks include everything you need to get started. Most models, for example, come with a removable seat, paddle, and pump. In theory, they are all you need to begin kayaking.

However, you might want to get a few extras that might help you have a better experience.

  • Storage – If you’re taking your kayak on long trips or in difficult terrain, storage space could become a critical issue. Most inflatable kayaks have some form of built-in storage, either inside the hull or lash points on the deck, but you can always add more with aftermarket gear like loops and cargo nets.
  • Removable Skeg – Most kayaks have a detachable skeg, which is a plastic piece resembling a fin that attaches to the kayak’s bottom. It aids you in rowing against current and wind. Flat-bottomed hulls need detachable skeg for stabilization, but V-shaped ones don’t.
  • Handles – Handles might not be the first thing you think about when buying a kayak, but they are essential. After all, without them, there’s no other way to bring the kayak to and fro the water. Handles can be present on the sides or the ends of the boat.
  • Bag – Even though you might be on the fence about getting handles for your kayak, you cannot do without a carry bag. A bag is what makes carrying a kayak from one place to another convenient and easy. It also acts like storage when you don’t use it.

The Takeaway

Inflatable kayaks are much more effortless to store and use than their counterparts. They make kayaking an accessible sport for people who reside in small apartments and homes or use public transportation.

While all the products mentioned are some of the best options available, Oru Kayak Foldable Kayak Bay, ST, is my top pick. It features a beautiful, robust design that rivals most models in handling.

Whether you’re searching for a premium quality inflatable kayak or on a tight budget, the products reviewed here should include at least one that fits your requirements. Depending on your boating needs, any of these choices will get you out having fun.
